Over the years, I've heard people say that you should never fill up your engine with oil so that the oil level goes ABOVE the FULL mark on the oil dipstick.

Is this cr@p? Or is there any truth to it? If it's true, why should you keep the level at FULL and not above?

Its kind of true.

If you overfill the oil a littl eyou end up with 1 kinda bad side effect, extra oil mist through the crank case.

But if you overfill it a lot the crank can hit the oil each rev which is pretty bad for it.

We run about 1/2l extra oil in the race car all the time

Overfilling a little is not bad , i fill mine to the H ( a little above the the full line , probably 400-500 ml extra) .

If you have enough oil in the c/case so the crank dips in to it it will aerate the oil then air will get in the oil pump and guess what , intead of pumping oil to lubricate the bearings you have air !! No oil going to the big ends , it wont take long to spin them .
