Hi all.

i was wondering where people have mounted their temp-sensor for their oil temp guage?

after doing some searching i found that a few people have used an adaptor piece that screws into the stock oil-pressure guage oulet on the block.

Where could i purchase and adaptor piece like this???

cheers

Sam.

A Google search on oil temp was enlightening and confusing to a degree. found a Volkswagen owners site, discussions on this topic. Evidently being air cooled those old things are extremely hard on oil and really need good monitoring of temps. Some of them go to the trouble of installing multiple senders, noting the different temps according to location.

The sump is probably the best "average" value, being the reservoir from which the whole lubrication system is fed. The oil pressure sender is not subjected to full flow (that I am aware of) and a take-off there may not accurately show the temps of the main body of oil.

cheers

thanks for that info. yep, ive now read that the sender must be fully submerged in oil to get an acurate reading. Also interesting to find some cars use oil temp senders for both before/after oil passes through the oil-cooler, to get 2 different readings!

Still unsure of where to mount it though, the GReddy sump plug replacement type seem the easiest, but that point is very low to the ground and i would hate to scrape it on anything...

the sandwhich plate option is about $50-60, so at that price its almost worth spending a bit more to get an oil cooler kit that has the adaptors anyway...

hmm, not sure..

i've got one installed in a sandwich plate behind the oil filter in the stock position. i'd prolly go a filter relocation kit with the appropriate sensor fittings for next time - might get a semi-oil cooler effect from that too without splurging on a full oil cooler.

i've found that oil temps obtained from sump locations tend to be a little lower than the temps obtained from a sandwich plate under the filter (5-10 degrees)...
