Here's what the Caltex website says:

"Vortex is a premium fuel designed to clean your car's fuel system as you drive. Vortex petrol is available in two grades: Vortex (95 Octane) and Vortex 98 (98 Octane)."

If you look up the locations of Caltex petrol stations that stock the Vortex 98, you'll find that there aren't any in WA.

"There's very little meat in these gym mats"

yeah it makes no sense that caltex wouldnt just buy the normal premium off BP. This guy was very adament that it was the ultimate, I will try and get him to produce some evidence for interests sake.

Hi, guys. This topic has been covered a number of times - try searching on "refinery sharing" and select "any date" to get the relevant threads (instead of the default "30 days"). The following might be illuminating, which was one of the contributions I made to an earlier thread:

In sunny WA, the BP Kwinana refinery supplies all fuel to all outlets of all other brands - they are the only refinery within a coupla thousand clicks, so that would seem to make sense!  But they just sell raw refined product to the other guys.  Shell, Caltex and the rest add their own recipes of additives to produce their "own" fuel.  BP may, depending on the contract, add some basic additives for some buyers.  Being selfish, money-grabbing capitalists, BP don't sell their 98 octane Ultimate to anyone else in WA - especially not Shell!!  So Shell have to make do with a raw 95 octane product, which they chuck a few things in to give it the yellow pecten touch :thumbdwn: .

So BP don't give 98 octane fuel to anyone in WA, including Caltex. And the recent shortage of Vortex, wierdly at the same time as the BP premium and Ultimate shortage, was not a conspiracy, but exactly because there was a problem at the BP Kwinana refinery.

Hope this helps.

Cheers. :(

If it really was 98, caltex would advertise it as 98. Why wouldn't they brand it as premium fuel when it is? When it's premium, it's worth more $$ than 95... and thus higher prices. Makes no sense to purchase 98 octane at their 98 cost price and not advertise it as 98 right? A company would do all it can to earn your extra buck, so if it's the real deal, again they would advertise it for sure.

My .5 cents worth

I sent a email to Caltex and asked weather they are or will be selling Vortex 98 in Western Australia and this is there responce.

Dear ****

Thank you for your inquiry and your interest in Vortex 98. Unfortunately at this time, we have no plans to introduce Vortex 98 to Western Australia. I apologise for any inconvenience.

I think that this answers the question once and for all

Hotrod this thread is not about vortex gold 98 ron fuel, so your email doesnt answer anything.

I spoke to my mate and he said he got the invoice for me, with RON ratings on the delivery's. Should be interesting, Ill post it up when he scans it.

p.s. I still dont believe caltex sells bp ultimate. :)

Caltex dont sell Vortex 98 in WA, thus meaning we only have sub 98 RON in WA.

    • Both Coils and Loom are OEM from the dealer.  I have not tried the Chinesium AFM. I Might today. Will get a timing gun to check this, to be honest I been meaning to check the timing because everything timing related is as the car came from Japan, being set by whatever shop did the timing 1.5k miles ago. I believe it is running rich all the time actually, as the pops and bangs feels like unburnt mixture in the exhaust. But I will check the pump and regulator. PS also new OEM fuel filter is in during the maintenance before these slew of misfires started. Cas been placed on the same position as it was before removed, same markings that were left by the shop that did the timing before I bought and imported the car. Thank you all for the responses so far by the way. Seems like I need to pay more attention to CAS condition and timing. Will check on that and report back here.
