hey Darren. the bosch pump has worked great for me so far. i know Nightcrawler has had some problems with the 040, though. then again i have heard bad things about the walbro aswell. do a search in 'forced induction performance' too, there are quite a few fuel-pump threads that mention these two pumps. :P

Darren,

I have had a bosch o40 or 044( cant remember) for many years now ( in fact martin d did an artical in hpi on how to do a in tank fit using our car as guinea pig for fit / photo's_at tilbrook's ).These are quite good pumps, we have had no trouble however they are on the noisy side with no music pumin!

Regards,

SKYLINE (Kym)... B)

Cheers guys just read the forced induction section and it seems they are quite similar in performance whilst the Walbro is some $60 cheaper and the bosch 040 can have some issues with fittment(eg the 1/4 tank which could cause surging issues). Cheers Kym might have to find that HPI Mag as i will be doing it DIY styles.

hey, the "1/4 tank" problem with the 040 is due to incorrect fitting of the pump in the first place, nothing to do with the pump itself.

sydneykid is not a fan of walbro pumps (which is enough for me, to be honest) and another guy i spoke to who has an escort race car said "nothing but bosch". you should be able to pick up an 040 for about $220-230 or less.

how much power are you planning on making? the 040 will be fine up a point but you might need something bigger. but then don't go for overkill or you get noise and overheated fuel (depending on your setup)...

cheers

Yeh the 040's are about $235 delivered where as Walbro are $175 delivered, yeh i was originally more keener on the 040 after hearing about issues with the Walbro, but now they seem to be quite similar, Thinking i might have to spend the extra cash and get the better quality one(040).

After AFM and a FC retune should be up around the 210-220kw mark which i will be happy with for a while.

i heard about that surging problem, on the bottom of the 040 there seems to be no nozle to connect that pick up hose thingy?? as all the other pumps habve them that maybe be the problem. i DUNNO really. :)

havent fitted it yet coz im a slack bastard :D

I took out my Bosch 040 that was noisy as hell (especially when you have below 1/4 tank or the weather is over 30 degrees) and put in a Walbro 255lph. Have had the car dynoed with both pumps and power is the same, at the same fuel rail pressure. I had the Walbro rechecked just the other week, after hearing disparaging comments from some SAU users, but Turbo Tune said the pump gave 'more than enough' fuel pressure for 200rwkw through 4 x 550cc injectors. They could not fault the pump whatsoever, yet I did have a 4 month old Bosch 040 fail year back.

Edit: Like DriftR says, the oem style mesh pickup of the Walbro is far more reassuring than the Bosch pump setup - the Bosch has no filtering and the pickup is not as low down (which could explain people's surging problems).

Having an 040 installed right at the moment (with z32 afm, fpr, fuel lines, sitc, direct battery feed to fuel pump, etc yadayadayada), and retuned on the safc.

Hopefully pick it up tonight...

Yah, have read that Walbro isnt that great but is serviceable, big thing there is the amount of cheap chinese copy Walbro pumps that are out there. Nasty stuff apparently. Read a lot about that. But also read genuine items flow like a 040.

With the 040, you must install it as low down in the tank as possible, to get around that 1/4tank surge 'feature'. Due to the pump not having a 'sock' like the 918-series. Install low down with a custom bracket, and that wont be a problem.

I got my Bosch 040 off ebay (victoria, fordefi) for $198 delivered, with 12month warranty.

Id expect them to say something like that regarding a skyline :)

I needed to get a new fuel pump after I did a SR20DET conversion in my Silvia, and went for the Bosch 040. It makes a buzzing noise every 5 seconds or so on idle usually, but can't usually hear it much when driving normally. As others have said though, it's almost constant noise when you are low on fuel. Doesn't bother me, I just don't pay attention to it.

When the weather is warmer your fuel is warmer. When the fuel is warm it expands. When the fuel is warm/expanded the pump has to work harder to pump the same volume of fuel, compared to a cold day when the fuel is more dense. The pump working harder is the noise you hear.

When I had my 040, on any day when my car had been out in the sun for a while and the temp was over 30 degrees, the buzzing noise was horrible.

    • Yeah this confirms what I was thinking. Volks are worth a crap load more than my M Sport 17s and 2500 is nuts!  240 is crazy cheap, was this 20 years ago? I have a fairly good air compressor so I'm tempted to get an eBay sand blaster.
    • I got a quote to restore a set of Volk racing gtc wheels at a wheel restoration shop which involved repainting the centres fixing some small gutter rash and repolishing them and the quote was $2.5k I ended up getting them sandblasted and powdercoated for $240
    • Nismo 300km/h speedo for R33 gtst in GTR cluster.
    • Has anybody had their wheels refurbished? I reckon it's likely bloody expensive. Even a sand blasting quote for my 17s was 200-300 per wheel! The E39 wheels are basic BMW M Sport (or M Tech at the time.) they have slight rash and some have signs of bad repair in the past on the lips. The main issue is that they've become really off coloured.  I think it will be too much as this is definitely (supposed to be) a budget resto. I've been looking at others for sale but they all have some minor damage and colour issues.  In the end I think I'll just need to sand blast them myself and do a respray.
    • Trying to figure out which nismo cluster i have. All the ones i see on the internet, the speedo goes up to 320kph and the revs 11k, with the nismo logo being on the rev gauge only. But on my one, the speedo goes up to 300 and says nismo, while the revs only go upto 10k and no nismo logo Dunno how to embed pics into a post so ill attach pic of my cluster and generic google search for reference Is what i have genuine?
