Just reading an old High Performance Imports, and in it Ben Ellis tests a R32 GTR fitted with a CAT back exhaust and a K&N filter. Hes able to post a 4.77sec 0-100km/ph time and a 12.97sec 0-400m time. He makes the comment though that the 0-100 time was done all in 2nd gear, i:e he launched the car in 2nd gear and removed the need to make a gear change to reach 100km/ph.

I was just curious if anyone else has had a go at launching their car hard in 2nd gear, either at the strip or even on the street, especially in a GTR..

Cheers...

Even considering the time saved by avoiding the 1-2 shift, you'd need a damn good launch to compensate for the lack of early acceleration (compared to first gear). Although I have heard of other cars acheiving their best acceleration starting in 2nd gear, including a lightly modified EL Falcon which simply toasted the rear tyres in 1st gear

Are you 100% that he didn't mean the 0 - 100km/hr sprint was only doing using the first two gears? ie first and second only.

Because I'd be suprised if starting in 2nd is beneficial, and more importantly you'd want a decent clutch to hold up to redline 2nd gear launches. Let alone the res of the drive train... :)

Although you sound rather confident in what he said, and if you're correct, then that's pretty cool ;)

All the ratios between R32 and R33 are the same.

Even though i've never tried it, i am thinking a second gear launch would cause the car to bog and return average times.

I am with Tommo and Drunken here. I think Ben Ellis meant that the 3rd gear wasn't necessary.
