Getting Gear Knob Off...

Silly question but Im just tring to get to the stereo and trying to get the gear knob off.

When I put it on last I used a little bit of araldite to secure it so all the numbers lined up (bad move!)

Now I am having such a time getting it off. Looks like I will have to sacrifice the gear knob. I.e. grip the gear shift shaft with multi grips and grab hold of the knob with some other grips to get tsom torque on it....

Anbody had a similar prob...I have undone it about 1/2 way (it was tight the whole way)..now it won't budge at all... I am going anti clockwise on it.

Only thing I would suggest is to pull out the c-clip at the base, and then take the whole stick out.

Turn it upside down, and then use some superglue solvent, drip it inside the thread and see if that helps. Cover up the the plastic surround and everything that comes out with it with a plastic bag though.

Once you crack the seal, it's easy street.

Thnaks mate. Didnt realise you could take the whole stick out...

I was able tu turn it about 5 turns (very hard though) but now it wont budge...

ah yeah, when you drop the gearbox, you have to take the stick out...

4 screw-bolts around the base, and under that is a C-clip with two little holes in the ends. I found a thin long-nose pair of pliers can get into each hole at the same time. Squeeze so the c-clip shrinks, then lift up and out. stick should pretty much come straight out.

Putting it back in is a LOT easier!

Oh, when you put whatever you buy into the thread to dissolve the glue, tighten and untighten it since you were able to loosen it 5 turns. That'll help get the solvent in there.

Is pretty hard to get it out with all the console bit hanging around. There is also another boot under the 4 bolt boot thing..

Its got to a point I cant tighten or undo it...Dont know if Ive wrecked the thread or something...what a bitch...

hm.... dunno about wrecked thread, both are metal, so I recken you'll be fine.

Yeah, the rubber boot just slides or folds upwards, and the console plastic part will have to come out with it. Normally you slip all that stuff off the end of the shifter, but you have a big knob in your way. ;o)

The only thing you need to do to have the console part away is to unplug the two plugs for the cigarette lighter.

If you resort to wrenches or what I would suggest; multigrips... use rubber on the teeth of the tool you're using so that you don't chip all the paint off the shifter. The rubber should grip better than metal-on-metal too, and if you stuff your knob in the process, then you can always buy one in the "for sale" section cheaply, or visit JustJap for an aftermarket one.

You shouldn't need any glue to keep the knob still, it should be pretty tight toward the end of the thread. If you DO want something like this again, try plumbers tape or something.

Yes teflon tape - thats what my dad said.. would have saved time and a gear knob

Hey Randy - thanks for the installation guide...

Did you run RCA or speaker wires to the boot?

Is it ok to run speaker and RCA cables together? I know you shouldnt run power near speaker or RCA...thanks

hey mate. No worries! I ran two pairs of RCA cables, and I will be running two pairs of speaker wire with them soon.

Apparently Skylines are terrible for introducing noise along RCA and speaker wire, but I ran them up the driver side away from anything power-related. The RCA's I bought were gold plated tips and well insulated, so here's hoping!

So, I dunno, I wouldn't think that there'd be any issue running RCA and speaker wire together. I did it in my last two commodores with absolutely no issues at all. There IS about 2 volts supposedly running out your RCA outputs, but if it's a shielded cable, and decent speaker wire, I really can't beleive that it would introduce audible noise.

Got the deck working just need to clean the surrounds..

sounds pretty good. Its an Mp3 Cd tuner (sony).

Still have to get the pocket etc. Just happy to get all the wiring done etc.

Will keep that in mind about the amp install/rcas etc.

No dramas man... might as well plug in the RCA's while you have the thing apart, then leave the rest of the cable on the passenger floor until you have time to run it along the passenger side door-sills etc. There are nice channels all the way to run them.

And yeah, get the Pulsar pocket. The one I have sucks. Or look for an R34's pocket... it has a folding lid on it much like the ash-tray our cars have.
