Just changing the reverse switch on my R33 that screws into the gearbox.. however i can't see a way of doing this without dropping the gearbox...

A spanner wont reach, or give the movement required to undo let alone tighten the switch.

A Deep socket is too deep... and a normal socket is to shallow...?

Has anyone done this before? or can give me any tips??

Cheers

my reverse switch wires are freyed and as a result when i put it in reverse the wires would be touching the box, earthing, short circuiting and blowing a fuse in the fuse box

loosing dash and power windows

so i took it back to the place that had most recently touched my gearbox as i thought it may had been thier fault (as i had the clutch replaced 1 day before this started happening

they put it up on the hoist and i stood thier next to them as they fixed the reverse switch and wires

so to answer... no you dont need to drop the box out

My mechanic did mine.

He put the car up on a hoist, loosened the nuts holding the gearbox up, and then got an apprentice to put a 2x4 up in between the tunnel and the box, then gently move the box to the side.

He used a spanner to undo it after chopping the wires at the base of the switch.

He had a very hard time though, and he's a big bloke.

get a tube spanner , ie the type they give you for the spark plug on a lawn mower. turns out mine was the right size and all! you need to dismantle the connector to get the wires thru the tube spanner but that's not that big a deal, they seem to actually be made to be easily disassembled. obviously you can just cut the wires off the old one. You'll still need to drop the box a little to get in there, but it the job is pretty straight forward after that. Oh, and get a shortish tube spanner, so you have clearance. good luck with it :P
