Hi all.. Im new to this forum, Im in a dilemma considering between a 92 Soarer (Manual) and a 99 Skyline (RB25DE Neo Manual) both are below $25K

details and pictures of each car...

said it was 3ltr (2JZ!?!?)

Some sort of special Alarm (one with external sensor, dunno if remote start)

Front Mount Intercooler

3" Exhaust

Sunroof

Driver's Airbag

Tinted Windows

Wheels Front 235/??R17 Rear 265/??R17

'99 R34 Skyline

56K+ kms

RB25DE NEO motor

White Color

Manual Transmission

Ground Wiring

if I am considering the R34, anything should I particularly lookout for? other than oil leaks..

any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks for the reply Wink...

in the first place i've always liked the Soarer because of its reliability and looks, but since its a 92 model.. whats pulling me back is its resale value down the track.. with the skyline.. its clearly said a 99 model so price depreciation wont be as bad.. and somewhere down the track i can mod it and stuff..

also if i buy the skyline, i have to pay for compliance (which i was told to be $3k) totalling just under $25k

with the Soarer i dont have to pay for any compliance (total would be a little over $21k) and if it is a 2JZ, i believe it came from Supra? not 100% sure..

any other comments, replies? c'mon people.. throw in the good and the bad of each car.. i wanna know all.. so i dont regret getting either one..

Yeah but it's a non turbo 2JZ so keep that in mind. I think they're around the 160kw mark.

Personally, I'd go the Skyline due to it being a hell of a lot newer. Besides, $21k is heaps for that Soarer.

On second looks... is that a fmic on it? Has it had a turbo conversion? If so, manual 2jz Soarer all the way!

I agree, at $21k the Soarer seems a bit overpriced. Check on carsales.com.au. I'm sure there are plenty of SC300/Soarers in similar condition that are much cheaper than $21k.

EDIT: Sorry just read posts properly and had another look at the Soarer pic, it does look like a fmic. A turbo 2JZ Soarer would be quite nice.

well, actually went to the car yard and had a proper look in the engine bay.

The soarer definitely has turbo.. also they are TWIN TURBO.. that is what im actually suspecting the car about.. whether it has been transplanted from a non turbo 1JZ to a 2JZ twin turbo.. but then again i thought that the 2JZ only came with a single big turbo (im not accurately sure) maybe the dealer had a typo..

Also if you actually think about it, the cost for each parts/mods to the Soarer would actually wind up to about the $20k mark...

Let's say the car itself is $10k

getting the items installed properly by a mechanic/shop would probably cost:

bodykit (bodykit itself only) $1k

gold (pearly kinda paint also with the body kit install $3k

front mount intercooler incl. install $2k

proper adjustable coilovers - im hoping its either TEIN or HKS incl. install $2k+

installed alarm $650

17" semi chrome wheels - front is 235 and rear is 265 - how much do you guys think they cost? i reckon around $3k mark.

Dark Tint $300

Total $11860 at least.. :S

well with the R34, i know its a non turbo.. but somewhere down the track, im pretty sure that buying a R34 halfcut with decent RB25DET wouldn't dig a deep hole in my pocket.. better yet be able to get R34 GTR halfcut.. then definitely it wouldkeep up the market value of the car..

let me know if you guys do or don't think so.. i want people to tell me im wrong or right.. so when i buy my 2nd car and shed sweat for it.. I won't be so disappointed..

thanks again!

2jz = twin turbo

1jz =twin turbo / late model 1jz= single turbo

i beleive the car is a 1jz twin turbo (92")

getting the items installed properly by a mechanic/shop would probably cost:

bodykit (bodykit itself only)  $1k

gold (pearly kinda paint also with the body kit install $3k

front mount intercooler incl. install $2k

proper adjustable coilovers - im hoping its either TEIN or HKS incl. install $2k+

installed alarm $650

17" semi chrome wheels - front is 235 and rear is 265 - how much do you guys think they cost? i reckon around $3k mark.

Dark Tint $300

Total $11860 at least.. :S

u will never able to get the $ u injected to the car :)

try to shop smartly and mix a bit second hand parts, those mod will only cost u 5-6k?

BTW soarer are HARD to sell, demand is not there, so u will be silly to pay that much.

there are plenty of soarer with more mod selling for near 1/2 their asking price, for the <10k price different, u can get any bodykit with some crazy paint job done

If it is a 2JZ twin turbo then it may be worth somewhere near $21k. But you should still be able to bargain him down a bit.

But as Maxx said, its probably a 1JZ and the dealer has made a mistake referring to it as a 3L.

If it is a 1JZ, then I still stand by my original opinion that it is well overpriced, even with all those mods.

Also you would probably be better off trading a non-turbo 34 in for a GT-T. Thats my opinion, but there is a thread on this topic in the Naturally Aspirated section, where you will find other peoples opinions.

  • 1 month later...

I dunno if anyone has mentioned this, but the 2JZ on the NA soarer is mated to an Auto transmission - this has manual - Id check out the quality of the conversion.

The twin turbo soarer came with the 1JZ engine in either manual or auto - I'd go the manual 1JZ twin turbo, or if you want the skyline, then go the R34 GTT

^^^ +1 Bob

As they are i, would probably go the Soarer, but not at that price.

But if you were comparing that Soarer with a GTT then i would say go for the R34

A '92 Soarer is getting long in the tooth (read: 16 year old car) but will definatley be the faster of the two.

And remember, even though Toyotas are reliable, the interior and lots of other parts will be getting a bit worn out.

As i tell every1 who asks which car they should buy, go out and drive them both.
