Just a quick question....

My old man looks after a VL turbo IP car for his boss's son, they've done a couple of meetings now and it has a strange habit of pumping a shitload of oil into the catch tank, like 1.5 litres after practice.., doesn't appear to be blowby, more like oil retention in the top end?

Its an RB30ET, but is this a common RB thing?

Nothing adverse appears to be happening, its not like its built to really open clearances, the motor is fresh and new top to bottom. A few people who had worked on RB30ET's did mention it might be an issue...But I thought maybe if it is an issue which the DOHC ones share, people might have some ideas?

If its just a design issue in the oiling system of the RB30ET, fair enough. It doesn't seem to be causing any form of damage, its just annoying.

Hi floody, After a day of Supersprinting I regularily empty out the contents of the catch can which is about 1 ltr. It is oil retention in the rocker covers. I spoke to Sydneykid about it previously and he explained that the RB engine has difficulty getting the oil back from the top end to the sump. He told me he fits an external drain and restricts oil to the cam covers, to help get the oil back quickly to the sump. Aparantly some Drag cars can fill 2 ltr catch cans over 1/4 mile.

Ahh okay, I had a feeling that might be the case. Thanks for that, I'll let the old man know.

is the sump baffeled? Like the trap door designs in sumps they use so you dont get oil surges or no oil pickup when going around a corner?

Yeah High Energy aftermarket baffled, big volume sump. Definitely not having cornering g-loading related oil surge problems.

What Ian said......plus they need oil flow restrictors in the block (where the cylinder head joins). The oil pump (especially a high flow one) pumps too much oil at higher rpm for the drains to return the oil to the sump. Depending on the rpm you are using, you may need to block off 1 of the 2 oil feed holes and fit a restrictor in the other one.

:D cheers :D

sydneykid, if i were to run a uprated pump on my little rb20 (such as a n1, nismo, trust, ect) would i have the same problem with too much oil going to the head?

when my motor was running i noticed it would throw some oil into the catch can but i suspected it to be the rings/pistons failing.........but perhaps it was also some of the oil vapours from revving so high (8k redline).

if so would putting a restictor in the head not cause oil starvation to they hydro lifters?
