Hmmm i'm more of a vl fan for sure. It was my first car. Just make sure the cooling section is clear and pressure tested, cause they have a habit of cracking heads (as mine did) apparently there's some mod that can be done to stop this happening.

Still i reckon they're better looking, but thats just personal preference. Get a calais, they're the sex

VL, radiator has a section in the middle to direct the water through the core, it can become loose meaning the water bypasses the radiator, doh.

VL is lighter, but flexier, esp in the rear end.

There is some minor difference in the engines (i think plenums differ to clear the low VL bonnet), makes like 2kw difference or so i'm told.

VL i'm sure has a fairly extensive aftermarket, since they are a bit of a cult car, probably cost more then a R31.

Diffs are very similar borg warner units in the two and the LSDs in both are shite.

Take your pick really :).

VL is probably a nicer looking car overall.

I currently own a NA VL Auto bout 5 years

My was and still my first car- keep me out of trouble till I got to 25+ to get a “sportier car”

Why did I go the VL

1) it’s so slow I can’t get into any trouble if I tried

2) heaps of cheep parts/servicing is cheep

3) cheep to insure compared to the VL turbo/R32GTR

4) had tasty mods/paint/rims when I got it:

Nice 17” rims

Cold air induction

3” mendal bent exhaust- 5” tip

Fairly new pain + colour coded bumpers

New interior

And I put in :

central locking

Alarm + 3 point moibliser

2.3k worth of stereo

2 small kangaroo dents (bloody roo’s)

All I can say is get a manual anything- make life interesting

You really need to give us more info:

Your age- insurance is greatly depended on age/driving history?

Is this your first car?

Intended use for the car?

Will there be future mods?

With this info we can help you more! (More relevant opinions)

I would swing towards the R31 cuz there is a lot less stigma associated with the R31’s than VL’s

The RB30 is quite hard to kill- but can easily be undone by the cracking heads “problem”

I don’t see it as a problem but more of an opportunity to put a RB25 head on and get an extra 30/40% out of the RB25/30 hybrid (NA RB30)

or just dump in a RB20/25/26

VL and the R31 are cheep, heaps of parts and can have heaps of mods before cracking open the engine for expensive internals

Me- id take the R31

Gets less attention from bogans/theiths/police- more of the sleeper

Say you wanna buy a VL?

i had this choice years ago and i went the VL got a VL Calais it was a good car i quite enjoyed it

never owned a R31 but now own a R32 GTR

but looking back on it i think i would have enjoyed the R31 just a little more

so yeah another vote for the R31

but do you really think a skyline forum is the best place to ask? if you went to a VL forum it would be VL most voted for

WERD. I have owned both and I can say the r31 is better in every aspect.

I heard that the rb30 cost Holden heaps to buy off nissan so they had to skimp on everything else. Having owned both I beleive it. Build quality is crap in vls.

Also an r31 handles much better than the vl. The vl often feels like you're driving on ice compared to the r31.

Some people think they don't look good. IMO they can look just as good if not better than a vl.
