Savage Bliss
I had a VL for years... never had any real problems with it except for the regular, cooling and such. Both are very reliable (hence still seeing so many of the fu*%ers on the road) and pull great cred. But I'd go for an R31, Silhouette version if possible, stonger auto and came with an LSD. Plus had electronic instrument panel in the dash for, KM's till empty, fuel usage and a few other features. So yeah 31 dude, even if they are a little more expensive. Plus better re-sell value. Cheers Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/98189-r31-or-vl/page/3/#findComment-1787194 Share on other sites
racsov500
SHHHHHHHHHH MARK!geez.. the more people that buy 31's, the less goodies are left for us! baahahaha Theres not contest really. R31s have everything better, the only good thing IMO (apart from the calais frount) about the VL is the Rb30, which is rooted by the cooling. R31s rarely have cooling problems, but the factory power steering is f**king dodgy as. when it works it works well, but its hard to find one without the pump or rack leaking. Mine do.. Either way, enjoy your lifter tap. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/98189-r31-or-vl/page/3/#findComment-1787382 Share on other sites
RB30-POWER
I would take a mint calais over a TI R31 anyday of the week. The R31 does have a better chasis, build etc. But to be honest the local model R31's have never done anything for me. Import 2 doors are horn though. Still wouldn't ever sell my calais for R31 though, even though i like the import R31 models. turbohectics
The reason they crack heads and have problems is because gm mounted the radiator to low its lower then the hose ,if you look at r31 the radiator sits higher, just mount the vls radiator up higher and it saves the head ,every vl nut knows this. Laterz I would go VL calais anyday they are hectick!!! 8OOSTED you forgot to add in vx clubsport leather interior and there massive brakes !! FATGTS-R
In VIC, any VL thats cheap will be more than likely thrashed. R31s have more older owners and its easier to find a clean example. Oh and the police wont look twice. For practicality the 31 got better gearing, air con standard, power steering standard, 4 wheel disk brakes standard, couple of KWs and boots that can double as a pond in winter lol. Triskillion
i worked in a cyclinder head recondition place for awhile and we got falcon heads 10 times a day and vl / commodore heads 5 times a day. but we never ever got a rb30 head off a skyline... never... and my boss said to me. they never get em. only VL's coz they fudged it up. if you wanna fit into the bogan scene get a VL and do it up... get the r31, do it up and it wont look so bad. look tuff etc. but prepare to be mocked by other skyline drivers that drive anything newer.... _8OO5TED_
bogan scene? get a VL and do it up? id say alot of the ethnic dudes are the ones bombing VLTs, and they are far from bogan! in mild stockish form a R31 is perhaps a better daily driven street car, but when highly modified id go the VL Calais all day long! Frink
my R31 used to blow away VL turbo's...... unless you spend big $$$ on them, they are a waste of time. even then they only go half decent in straight line. you'll never get them to handle any good either...... kudos.motorsports
I will admit I have a soft spot for the VL, especially a Calais. Unless your throwing a S3 Passage GT into the equation then my vote is a VL. Mulkers
not every one who is a vl driver is a dickhead, but every dickhead happens to be a vl driver (around here anyway) i like the 31, and am buying one next week. import 31s are Freakin sex! jazzza
to me, someone who doesnt own a syline as of yet and a VL, i would have to say the reputation surrounding the VL is too much for me to handle consdiering buying one. sure, they have sleeker lines that the R31, but as previously mentioned, the cops will hastle you like no tomorrow because the representation vl's are given is that your going to do something very stupid, very soon. R31 to average commoner is a granny spec car. im still looking around as to what skyline i would like to get, but the 31 has a quieter name in the law circle, and considering i dont want to get told off constantly, i would go the skyline hands down... IOWNU
Hmm tough choice. VL Turbos can me made to really fly, but at the end of they day they're a Holden. Plus as mentioned by a few ppl, you will get hassled in a VL, they have a rep, whereas R31s, most people just think its some old car. Buy either based on condition.
