Well since I own a imac VL myself I cant really say. :)

For the record not ALL VLs are pieces of shit and not all of the drivers are wankers.

VLs can be a great car if in kept in great condition, just look at mine for a good example, Racsov500 knows what im talking about. :(

IMO VLs have so much more style then R31s.

Also if you buy a VL make sure its a 5 speed, Autos are slow and have no balls (Unless its Turbo).

I do know of some parts that holden no longer stock for the vl.

Unsure if Nissan are different.

Great thing about VLs is parts are so easy to find because you can go to Holden or Nissan. :)

I got my head gasket from Nissan and my Alternator is from a R31. :(

I'm about to buy my first car, i have always wanted an R31 and i have also thought about the VL. You can find many r31s which are not thrashed, unlike the VL's.

I would go the R31...

Just a question...Would you guys go the series 3 TI or a series 3 Auto Silo?

I havent had that problem yet with mine as it hasnt had no major dramas, hell it still hasnt cracked it's head yet lol that must be rare for VLs. :(

It is pretty silly asking whether to buy a VL or a R31 on a Skyline site as the R31 would get the thumbs up just like if it was posted at CT the VL would get the thumbs up.

Even if this was asked at Boostcruising I still think it would be biased towards R31s as most people there dont have a clue about VLs all they see them as is Bogan Pieces of shit. :)

Well I certainly have not regretted my decision owning a VL, infact I like them so much I want to buy one with a V8 this time around. :)

for looks it's down to personal preference.

Call me biased because I have a 31 (on my 3rd) but I really don't like the way VL's look. They look to me like Holden got lazy when it caime to facelift the Commodore so they made the VL look like a stretched and warped Camira.

I'll concede that the 31s are boxy, but I think they pull it off, and bugger me if I don't think they're dead sexy when there neeat and tidy (i.e. looked after), lowered to the right height with the right set of wheels and a cooler poking out the front end.

When my Simmons arrive in a few weeks, I'll show you what I mean. :)

Well my personal prefference is the VLs are one of the nicest looking cars from the 80s. :)

This is a honest opinion when I say this but in the looks department VLs look 100% better then R31s, R31s are a bit to ugly.

Also you cant really say one is better then the other because remember they are both over 18 years old and some perform better then others, if you were comparing them brand new thats a different story. :)

At the end of the day the R31 has a better build quality, is more reliable and is much less likely to have had a hammering.

This is what it really comes down to when buying an old car, especially if its your first car as money is likely to be thin, you don't want to be spending money you don't have on repairs.

You'd be stupid to buy parts for an rb30 from Holden. They are exactly the same parts stocked by Nissan, only more expensive.

lol @ Stretched and warped Camira.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Although only specifically refering to the series 3 r31, I'm not so much a fan of the earlier Pintara look-a-likes.

Read a few articles that you can find that compared vls and r31s when they were first released. r31 won easily for all the reasons already stated. Also I believe r31s are a bit quicker due to the better diff ratios. 3.7 for manual and 3.9 for auto, whereas the vl has the one 3.45 ratio.

The diff ratio difference is kind of offset a bit by the VL being around 50-100kg lighter than the R31, depending on the variant.

Either way, each time I've seen an "acceleration comparison" *cough*, back in my irresponsible teenage years, I only saw a VL in front once.

non turbo against non turbo of course

r31 parts and vl parts are cheap as chips

the prices are almost identical, except nice calais turbos go for shitloads

it comes down to personal preference in the end. I wouldnt touch a vl unless it was a calais turbo, in which case I would probably end up taking the engine out and putting it in a r31

Yes but that doesnt mean a VL cant be a good car. :P

Also it seems the reason why there arent so many thrashed R31s as VLs is because R31s werent a mass produced family hack like the VLs, also VLs seem to appeal more to the "Dickhead young blokes" unfortunatley.

The gts should have come with it

Nissan wanted to do a turbo GTS but didn't for a lot of reasons that are still unclear, stuff like they wouldn't produce it without an intercooler, but having one would have driven the development and sale costs too high, Nissan engineers wouldn't approve them without 5 stud hubs, etc etc, though I personally don't believe the 5 stud hub one

There was a concept prototype Silhouette GTS with an intercooled RB30ET that ran something like 200kw/400Nm and a flat 14 second 1/4 mile, which was awesome for 1987/88 6 cylinder
