Just thought i might share this infor of what i had found a few days ago, and is an interesting read.

Ethanol in Petrol

Late last year the Federal Parliament approved legislation capping the use of ethanol in petrol to 10% (E10) and requiring that petrol stations adequately inform consumers if they are using petrol that includes ethanol. An anomaly currently exists in South Australian legislation whereby ethanol blended petrol is able to be sold within the State as long as the ethanol containing petrol conforms with current emission standards and is not blended in South Australia. Currently the RAA is not aware of any petrol stations selling ethanol blended petrol within the state, however this is likely to change as infrastructure around distribution of E10 increases.

What is Ethanol?

Ethanol (ethyl alcohol) is a clear, colourless liquid, generally manufactured from grain or sugar. (Currently around 90% of Australia’s ethanol is produced from wheat). Blending ethanol and petrol in various proportions has been put forward as a means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and alleviating adverse economic conditions in the sugar industry.

Ethanol can be considered as a renewable fuel when produced from sustainable agricultural sources and has potential for cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Whether this potential is realised depends on the feedstock and the technology used in the production process as well as the distribution and blending procedures.

When determining the overall environmental impacts or benefits of ethanol use, the ‘whole of life’ effects must be measured, including the impacts of the production of wheat or sugar produced solely for ethanol production.

Ethanol is more costly to produce than petrol and requires its own storage and distribution infrastructure.

Ethanol can be used as an automotive fuel by itself and can be mixed with petrol to form an ethanol/petrol blend. Pure ethanol can only be used in specially designed engines.

Vehicle fuel economy is reduced when petrol is diluted with ethanol because of its lower energy content.

Is using Ethanol blended fuel better for the environment than fuel without ethanol? Results of studies conducted around the world on emissions outcomes and performance of ethanol blends are often contradictory. Emissions from ethanol blended fuels vary markedly between different ethanol blends and different vehicle technologies.

Within the Australian context, the use of ethanol blends of 10% (E10) has been found to result in:

Decreased emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) (32%) and hydrocarbons (HC) (12%);

Increases in non-regulated toxics: acetaldehyde (180%) and formaldehyde (25%);

A slight (1%) increase in nitrogen oxides; and

Decreases in non-regulated toxics: 1-3 butadiene (19%), benzene (27%).

Recent Australian life-cycle analysis work has revealed that E10 blends are considered greenhouse neutral.

Why is it used as an automotive fuel?

Ethanol can be added to petrol to increase the octane of the fuel and to reduce engine ‘knock'.

Until recently, ethanol was an attractive fuel-extender because it was exempt from fuel excise, giving ethanol a 38cpl tax advantage over petrol. The government now applies a 38cpl tax on to ethanol.

Will Ethanol blended fuels cost more than unblended petrol?

Ethanol has a lower energy content than petrol, the 1998 Australian field trial by Apace Research observed a fuel consumption increase of up to 2.8% with E10.

Because of this higher fuel consumption there are fewer kilometres per tank of fuel, so ethanol blended fuels will cost motorists more.

The excise on ethanol is the same as that on petrol, however producers are able to claim back the tax paid on the additive. Therefore, consumers pay the tax at the pump, the government gives it back to ethanol producers and consumers are subsidising the industry to the tune of 3.8cpl for each litre of 10% ethanol blended fuel.

Commonwealth Treasury estimates that a 10% ethanol blend without any government subsidy would increase fuel prices by 7.8cpl. Consumers will pay for ethanol blended fuel either through this current fuel tax rebate or through higher fuel prices.

Will Ethanol damage my vehicle or affect its performance?

Most metal components in fuel systems will corrode or rust in the presence of water. Ethanol increases petrol's ability to absorb water without separating and Ethanol blended petrol can therefore ‘hold’ more water and carry this through the engine. The greater the concentration of ethanol the greater the ability to ‘hold’ water.

Several studies have examined the effect of E10 on fuel tanks and fuel system components and have concluded that ethanol up to 10% does not increase corrosion in normal, everyday operation.

Ethanol blends may have a deteriorating effect on the rubber components of an engine. Other additives, such as benzene may also have an effect.

In older models, deposits in fuel tanks and fuel lines are occasionally loosened by E10, and the fuel filter may become plugged. This is remedied by a fuel filter change.

If very Ethanol rich fuel is used this may cause an engine to stall.

Laboratory tests have shown that blends of 20% pure Ethanol in petrol can damage some conventional automotive paint.

Vehicle warranties

A number of motor vehicle and marine engine manufacturers advise their warranties would be voided where fuel blends of greater than 10% ethanol have been used.

my tuner also mentioned that Ethanol absorbing water (which can reduce detonation) will also loosen crap in your tank, and ethanol being an alcohol will clean crap from everywhere.

If it gets past your filter, it will clog injectors,and cause your car to run lean because the ECU thinks the injectors are working ok, but it fact they are blocked, causing leaning, and causing detonation.

So its not really the E10 that kills cars..

He said that if you do switch to E10 (which is not a bad option when its available evrywhere) you should change your fuel filter every 3-4 weeks for a few months to make sure your system being cleaned by ethanol is being filtered properly.

He said ethanol is great to tune to, as its resistant to detonation to a small extent, and can have a fair amount of extra timing advance put in (he's seen 5 - 10 degrees in some cases)

Don't take my tuners words as gospel, its just what he's experienced while using it.

    • Unfortunately haven’t taken pics yet after it was finished. All the edges are hemmed nicely, just had to cut holes for the gear shifter and seat bolts and seat belt bolts in the rear. The molds seem like they’re done with steam and a layer of glue on the underside to hold a bit of shape but still soft enough that it’s a good fit when it’s all pressed down.
    • When's the rear mounted turbo kit coming? Needs dose and V8 chop idle lol.
    • I was very unimpressed with how the car came up from the A pillar forward, before I hit things (twice). It all has to go. It had to go, but now it has to go... more. So we finally found the very first Shennanigans with the entirely perfectly setup engine that had no problems being pulled apart to improve on 'was perfectly fine'. Cam bearings looked a bit... stock. Which isn't entirely bad given they were stock and this is a ~20 year old engine. So new cam bearings are on the way because it's somewhat difficult to get to this stage to do it later, and it will trash the block. It was quite unusual that it wasn't done when the perfectly new-looking VCM cam was originally installed by [unknown] What IS unusual is the cam that was installed there was advanced SIX degrees. As to why there is no way to know.. however it could have been @Dose Pipe Sutututu's mate who wanted a larger cam sound but also wanted it to come on earlier to be more usable. This is my dyno sheet with the previous setup - This cam is not supposed to peak until 7000+ RPM, according to VCM. This is what lead me down the whole 'my heads/intake setup is running out of puff and can't support the cam' line of thinking to begin with. Anyway too late now - New cam is in! It could be rather funny if this smaller cam acts like a larger cam because it isn't advanced six degrees. In the spirit of everything is working amazingly - the COMP cam required no dialling in whatsoever. It was about 0.5 degrees advanced, which seems pretty bang on. Any adjustment either way would be further out. I'm told as a chain breaks in it ends up regarding back about 0.5 a degree as the chain breaks in, making it bang on. In the spirit of everything was previously working amazingly - The timing gear that was taken out turned out to be was an N-Motion double timing chain kit, with adjustable cam gear (which is how it was 6 degrees advanced) and all looks entirely perfectly new. It also had a Torrington bearing, which was one of the reasons I ended up getting the Cloyes kit which they used in the C5R 24 hour racecar - Because I couldn't confirm what was in the engine when talking to Tony Mamo. I did believe however it was a Double chain kit of some kind... but found no supporting documentation or evidence for it.
    • I recently did this to my R33 with the full set from Car Mats Direct, they can't do the vinyl anymore that's advertised on the website due to a supplier issue so I ended up with the Black Loop Pile which looks great. I went all out with rubber sound deadening sheets from Repco and also added the sound deadening foam layer option with the carpet. Makes a world of difference and got rid of all the weird smells in the 29 year old interior. It was a bit of work but I'd 100% recommend it, Car Mats Direct had awesome customer service and quick postage. Replaced my seats with some sporty ones from Autotechnia while I was at it, feels like a new car.
