Now, for the pro's.

I have a RB26 powerd R32 GTS4, its setup for drift with my dancer grid controller ( rwd etc) works a treat.

car is setup for some dori. I was thinking> I have a thick arc cooler the car now never overheats.... seeing never past 85C in temps even if i sit on rev limiter pretty hard with my hks metal headgasket i got here also.

since the nismo thermostat opens up about 12C earlier, will that mean my temps will be floating in the mid70's? is this bad as the stock one opens up about 72C meaning its just going to run very cool? what will the side efects be of running lower temps...

it wont make bugger all difference. also a thick intercooler will often make your engine (water temp/oil temp) run hotter, not cooler. A really thick core pre-heats the air before it passes through the rad. if you want to control engine temp you need a nice big oil cooler properly mounted in a duct.

cooler? :lol: im talking radiator here, i dont have a front mount :)

also got oil cooler with no thermostat :)

i just want to know the best operating temps for my car... to make the engine live aslong as possible.

i heard, just because the thermostat opens up early, doesnt mean temps will drop uptop, will get to the same heat

You need oil and water temp gauges to know these answers.

I wouldn't be game to run an engine oil cooler in a road car with no thermostat either.

Minimum gauges for drift IMHO are: oil pressure, oil temp, water temp, boost.

Not the stock water temp gauge either, it reads in a very rough range.

Its interesting to read why a thrmostat on a road car is essential...the way i see it in a road car you are often stationary, in which case oil cooler isnt working, and at best the speeds you travel on the street combined with the fact that you cant really give your car stick on the street so that to the temp differential between your oil temp and ambient air increases, well i dont see it as being that big a no no.

Also, is 80deg C oil any better or worse for your car then 75 or 85 deg C???

I suspect all the Nismo thermostat does is reduce the rate of heating of coolant rather then influence the peak temp, i doubt it will do any damage to an engine...but im happy to hear from soemone htat knows as opposed to guessing :P

Standard Thermostat is

Commence Open 76.5degC

Full Open 90degC

What is the full specs on the Nismo item, any idea?

Yeah, my question as well re Nismo thermostat. From the way my motor behaves with the stock thermo, the specs you mention above are spot on. I have Microtech so water and air inlet temps on display.

My motor does tend to spike in water temp too fast for my liking so if Nismo thermo helps then all the better. I have Nismo water pump and that also helped alot.

An interesting topic this one , I get the idea that good synthetic oils are less viscous at lower temperatures than mineral oils so oil drag is less of a problem .

There is one school of thought that says lower coolant temps can make more power because less chamber heat is conducted into the fuel/air mix before it is ignited by the spark . So if the detonation threshold is lower a little more full load advance can be used all else being equal .

It probably a case of std thermostat for road and lower for race , its hard to imagine the oil being too cool in a hard worked engine on the track .

Well in one of my old RB powered cars, when i purchased it, it would never go above the cold mark, used lots of fuel and generally ran average.

When i removed the thermostat it was an aftermarket job, that due to the poor designed actually got stuck open.

Even in traffic it would never really go above cold.

I don't advise no thermostat at all it will cause major wear and tear.

The other thing is as well, no thermostat generally means that the water can pass through the radiator too quickly and it can't remove the heat as it doesn't have time and it can overheat at the other end of the scale.

Too Cold or Too Hot.

Thermostat is a critical piece of the puzzle for sure....

My GTR has 1 of these Nismo thermo thingies.... i've driven 300km in it this afternoon; ambient temp = 26-31c, Intake Air Temp = 48-52c, Water Temp = 76-80c and those temps ranged from 110km/h highway driving to start stop start stop with it copping a hiding inbetween :D

I'll see tomorrow if I have any manuals with it etc.

    • Uncle Duncan Yeap, FI Interchiller  Works well, normal IAT's cruising with the WTA only went from 50°c+ to 25-30°c with the interchiller  Before, when on it hard, the IAT would see 80-90°c, now, the highest has been was around 38°c IIRC IAT is measured under the blower hat I recommend it for the street or strip where your only on it hard for 10 or so seconds, but it wouldn't be efficient for sustained track use as it would heat soak from the AC turning off or whatever it does during WOT to protect the compressor It really needs the AC running for it to not heat soak and keep the WTA coolant chilled My WTA coolant temps when just cruising is around 2°c

    • I've been pondering this, I really enjoy the convertible thing, for me, it's like riding a motorbike, without all the issue of riding a motorbike, mainly, my old sore arthritic joints getting beaten up, and, being able to do it in shorts and a T-shirt and not needing a helmet and all the other gear required, especially like wearing jackets and pants in the summer, or needing 6 layers of cloths in the winter, or not having wet weather gear handy when your 100km away from home on the bike when it decides to start raining As for the hard top and its Coupe look, whilst I do lose all that open top feeling that I really enjoy, from my experience with the NB with a detachable hard top, the cabin is a much nicer place to be, the difference in noise for one, a hard top quietens down the interior, alot, with the soft top up or down it's pretty noisy, which, after 5 or so hours, can get tiring But, as you stated, the detachable hard top totally changes the look of the car, in a really good way, and for me, the look of a detachable hard top is so much better than the PRHT which looks more like a after thought with its weird bulbous rear roof line For me, the minimal effort of putting in on, or storing it after removing it, is well worth the time and effort for the look alone And yes, I'm sure the next owner will be grateful for it as well.......
