A Few Questions From A Young Driver...

Hey guys,

I've been browsing these forums a while but I don't post that often. Anyways, I've booked my P's driving test for 23 February next year (on my birthday). I was wondering if any of you could give me some tips for passing the test? I'm going to take lessons and do a driving course at Eastern Creek soon, but any advice would be appreciated.

On another note, I'm hopefully purchasing a NA R32 before I do my test (and before you call me a rich boy, I've been saving for it since I was 14 ). I don't think it is a wise idea attempting the test in a Skyline, 'cos I reckon that the testing officer will be like: 'Skyline = Hoon! Automatic fail.' So I'm going to do the test in an automatic Corolla. :lol:

In terms of insurance however, which insurance broker would you recommend to insure my car? I've got a quote from JCI/AAMI, and it was $685 for 3rd party + fire & theft. I haven't checked out other brokers yet but any recommendations would be taken onboard.

is the r32 n/a you want to buy going to be auto? I thought if you take a test in a auto car your licence only allows you to drive auto's till you get off P's

yeh, i would advise getting ya licene in a manual, u'll be glad u did later

the best thing i think ya could do b4 ya take the test is book a leason or 2 with a driveing instructer and get him to take you through the test in the general area of where you will take the real P's test. also the car ya do take to do the test, make sure ya fermilya and comftable with it, less chance of stuffing sumthing up cause ya not used to the car.

and just to make it a lil easyer, dont go during school zone times. midday is good if posible. school zones in an area are an extra stress that ya dont need when taking ya drivers test.

oh and JCI isnt too bad.. they seem to be one of the rare ppl who insure young drivers in skyline, but ya will pay a bit more for it. a little under $700 is good. im paying a lil under $1000 for 3rd party fire and theft on my r33 gtst

i would go with ranicx said about the driving test.

just my opinion on the insurace is that if you cant affor compriencive you cant affor a skyline.

iam with jci and i pay 3544 a year for an r32 GTS4

its a pain in the arse having to pay that much but its worth it

and by the way iam only 18

best advice anyone can give you is to get some driving lessons. but it all depends on your own skill.

ive been driving since i was 14 and i didnt get any lessons before i went for my p's. it all depends on you and your ability, but not knowing you i'd definately say get some lessons in manual.

I already own my manual R33 N/A. And I'm not taking this for my test.

Also I plan on getting a couple of lessons in January/Early Feb around my area to give me that little extra boost of confidence.

Just make sure you stick to all the good driving habits like not cutting people off, no hanging arm out of door, not holding the steering wheel with 3 fingers, NO HEEL AND TOE lol, common sense i guess

my mate failed his test because when the lights went amber he floored it when he had more than enough space to slow down.

it was funny as hell when he told us.

Yeh just drive like a good lil boy, and also i suggest getting your license in manual, i got mine in auto and was regretting it later on

although green P's allow you to drive manual (if your in NSW)

i didnt do any instructors courses or anything, just drove my oldies around when ever they needed to go somewhere, hehehe

You should b fine, just dont make any stupid mistakes

The instructors like you to show how competent a driver you are, so if you can hand brake it around a few corners, maybe some slight drift action, they will be very impressed.

Lighten up the mood in the car a bit by pumping some loud music then hitting your brakes in time to it.

seriously though just relax and drive responsibly and it'll be all good. If you've been driving a little bit you'll be fine (i've seen some terrible drivers passing their tests),

I can't physically drive a manual, and I don't have a manual car to do the test in (unless I bought a manual skyline and did the test in that, but I'm not wasting $41!).

Yeah I'm hooking up some lessons. I've booked my test at Warriewood, are there any good driving schools in the area anyone can recommend? My test is also booked out of peak hour and school times, in the middle of the day .

JCI seem alright but what's with the theft coverage...doesn't it say coverage 'up to $5000'. Does that mean I only get a $5k payout if my car is stolen?! Help me out here!

That JCI thing is only if you get 3rd party property only and pay a bit extra for theft and fire coverage. If you get full comprehensive it covers total agreed cost of car (i think its agreed value...not sure).

Don't worry too much about the manual thing. when you get your green p's you can drive manual anyway. If you intend on buying an auto shouldn't be too many probs.

As for the parents thing. Just tell them that buying a skyline is a good way to get the bitches, that'll convince em for sure....

Don't forget to dose up on the Wild the sphincter of the universe before the test...

1) it'll make you calm down

2) your RTA test person will be your friend

3) you'll probably improve your driving skills

4) and if you fail, you probably won't remember it

Nah, here's some serious advice.

1) Drive like you're 50+ and have no idea of where you are going

2) Drive at least 5-10km/hr below the limit but don't make it obvious

3) As soon as the instructor says something, act (e.g. indicate as soon as he/she says left/right)

4) DO NOT ATTEMPT ANYTHING STUPID

5) Take you time, all Ps tests are time restricted (20-30mins)

6) Always keep looking at all 3 mirrors

Was no real convincing to be 100% honest man.

My dad always new that I liked imports and Skylines.. (He's actually getting his Series II from Vic on NYD )

Spotted my Series I GTS on carsales and I added the guy to MSN and spoke to him.. Got a tonne of pics and a tonne of answers.. Frequent phonecalls and etc.. Was really co-operative.

Before I knew it, we were travelling to Vic to get it..

All you have to really do is let your parents trust you. My dad wouldn't of bought it (and he's told me this) if he knew I was gonna do 180km/h and do doughnuts in the Maccas carpark.

My parents know I'm not gonna excessively speed and do stupid things with friends. Aslong as you can prove/convince that to them, there shouldn't be a problem.

Best of luck mate. To be honest I'm a little nervous about my test aswell, I can just picture dropping the clutch by accident or something LOL..

Well back in my day....the guaranteed way to pass was to make sure you get your instructor via the same place you are doing the test. Since the testors and instructors are the same people they look after the people their mates taught.

Failing that just drive confidently and you will be fine....don't dawdle or baulk just go like you've been driving for years
